Estradiol vaginal suppositories overview

  • Ingredients

We offer estradiol vaginal suppositories 10 mcg which is an FDA-approved generic medication. Each box contains 18 pre-filled applicators.

Each insert contains 10 mcg of estradiol, with inactive ingredients including starch, corn, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and polyethylene glycol.

  • How to use estradiol vaginal suppositories

Each applicator contains a tiny tablet. This tiny and fast-dissolving tablet is inserted with a hygienic plastic applicator.

The standard dose is to apply daily at bedtime for two weeks, and then taper to twice weekly. With ongoing use, you'll improve the health of the vagina, urethra, and bladder and prevent bothersome symptoms.

To avoid exposing a sexual partner to this medication, avoid sexual intercourse immediately after applying.

  • Is vaginal estrogen treatment safe?

Vaginal estrogen treatment is beneficial because it releases a very low dose of estrogen directly into the vaginal area, without being absorbed significantly throughout the body. This means vaginal estrogen has fewer side effects and is a safe option, even for women who do not want or cannot take other forms of menopause hormone therapy.

There is no evidence that vaginal estrogen increases the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, or any other serious problems.

At Interlude, we offer estradiol vaginal suppositories that are bioidentical and FDA-approved. This means you'll receive medication that's been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy, and that ships from a US-regulated pharmacy.

  • How long does it take to work?

You can start to notice improvement within two weeks. It may take up to 3 months to notice full benefits.

Use of vaginal estrogen treatment has been shown to:

    • Restore moisture and flexibility to the vaginal tissues
    • Normalize vaginal pH
    • Reduce pain with sex
    • Prevent UTIs
    • Reduce urgency and frequency of urination

You can use vaginal estrogen as long as needed to prevent symptoms from returning. There is no age limit.

As estrogen levels decline, the vulva, vagina, urethra, and bladder become thin and dry. Vaginal estrogen works to restore the health of the tissues and prevent issues like dryness, painful sex, unusual odor, and urgency.

Questions?

  • What are vaginal estrogen suppositories?

Vaginal estrogen suppositories are a topical therapy to address changes in and around the vagina (such as vaginal dryness, itching, and burning) caused by declining estrogen levels from menopause. These changes are also known as vulvovaginal atrophy or the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

  • How long does it take for vaginal estrogen suppositores to work?

Improvement is noticed starting in the first month, with a slower progressive improvement for the following 24 months.

    • Within one month: Vaginal moisture is noticeably restored and vaginal tissues are noticeably healthier
    • Within 3-4 months: Maximum vaginal moisture is restored
    • Within 24 months: Vaginal pH returns to normal levels

  • What are the benefits of vaginal estrogen suppositories?

Estradiol vaginal cream helps prevent vaginal and urinary discomfort due to menopause (genitourinary syndrome of menopause). Use of estradiol vaginal cream has been shown to:

    • Restore moisture and flexibility to the vaginal tissues
    • Normalize vaginal pH
    • Reduce pain with sex
    • Prevent UTIs
    • Prevent incontinence

  • How to choose a vaginal estrogen suppository

There are several types of FDA-approved low-dose vaginal estrogen suppositories, and all are equally effective:

    • Estradiol vaginal suppositories This pre-filled applicator contains a tiny tablet that quickly dissolves into the skin. Each tablet contains 10 mcg of estradiol. This is the most affordable option since it is offered as a generic.
    • Imvexxy This gel insert is applied using a fingertip. Each insert contains 10 mcg or 4 mcg of estradiol.
    • Intrarosa This gel insert contains vaginal DHEA, which the body converts into estrogen and testosterone.
  • Does vaginal estrogen have any side effects?

Data from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study showed that for postmenopausal women who used vaginal estrogen, the risk of invasive breast cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, stroke, and blood clots was the same as those that did not. The boxed safety information for vaginal estrogen shows that there is an increased risk of these conditions, however women's health groups state that these warnings do not apply to low-dose vaginal estrogen and they have been lobbying the FDA to remove the warning.

  • What causes vaginal atrophy (VA) or the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)?

The vulva, vagina, urethra, labia, bladder, and sexual organs are tissues in the body that exist because they contain estrogen. When your ovaries stop producing estrogen beginning in perimenopause, these tissues begin to atrophy. (We hate that word as much as you do. But atrophy is normal. And we're here to tell you that treatment is normal too.)

  • What is vaginal atrophy (VA) or the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)?

Also known as vulvar vaginal atrophy (VVA) or the genitourinary symptoms of menopause (GSM), vaginal atrophy is when the tissues feel dry, thin, too tight, or tender. You may notice changes in the shape of your vulva. You may even experience bleeding.

As the tissues change due to lack of estrogen, the vagina produces less mositure, the vaginal canal shrinks, the vaginal folds lose elasticity, sexual organs become less prominent, blood flow and nerve sensation is reduced, and the urethra is exposed to abrasion and infection.

This leads to painful sex, frequent UTIs, urgency to pee, yeast infections, loss of sexual pleasure, and discomfort in everyday activities. (Even wiping with toilet paper can be painful!)

  • How do I sign up?

To get started you'll create a secure account and complete payment. Then you'll take an online assessment that will be reviewed by our medical team. A licensed MD or GYN will create a prescription and care plan that's customized to your needs.

We are currently offering your first two months of prescription treatment for . After that, we'll ship refills for every two months. Your initial treatment requires a one-time online visit fee. Unlimited messaging and free shipping are included in your care with us.

  • Do you take insurance?

We do not accept insurance at this time. However, with rising out of pocket costs, high deductible plans, and high co-pays in the traditional health care system - Interlude is more affordable and accessible for most women - with or without insurance.

  • What's the best way to pay with HSA or FSA?

First, check the balance on your FSA or HSA account and that your plan covers prescription treatment through Interlude. You can place an order online, using your FSA or HSA card (as you would any other credit card), or by calling our Customer Care Team for assistance at (909) 378-6899, Monday to Friday 9AM - 5PM Pacific Standard Time.
