Vaginal estrogen
We recommend you review this with a medical provider.
  1. Consider vaginal estrogen
Vaginal estrogen is a topical prescription treatment that replenishes the estrogen in the vagina, urethra, and bladder. It can rejuvenate tissues, restore natural lubrication, balance pH, prevent UTIs, and reduce urgency and frequency of urination. It's available as a cream, tablet, or ring.
Strength of recommendation: Level A Supported by sufficient, consistent scientific evidence.
  2. Review the safety and efficacy
Vaginal estrogen is a safe and effective option for women with moderate to severe symptoms and those who do not respond to lubricants and moisturizers.
Strength of recommendation: Level A Supported by sufficient, consistent scientific evidence.
  3. Review the risks
Although oral estrogen carries serious risks like cancer, these risks are highly unlikely with vaginal estrogen. Very little is absorbed in the body. The clinical trials and observational studies are reassuring.
Strength of recommendation: Level B Supported by limited or inconsistent evidence.
  4. Clear it with your oncologist
For women with a history of breast or endometrial cancer, you can take vaginal estrogen, but you should clear it with your oncologist first.
Strength of recommendation: Level C Supported by expert opinion.
